How to Write 9 in Cursive
Cursive 9 is the mirror image of the 6 — a closed loop at the top connected to a long descending tail. The loop sits in the upper portion of the numeral height while the tail drops down to or just below the baseline. Common errors include leaving the loop open, making the tail too short, or drawing the digit so quickly that it resembles a 4 or a g.

How to Form the Cursive Number “9”
Start near the top-right of the numeral height. Sweep up and to the left, then down in a counter-clockwise curve to form a closed loop that returns to the starting point at the upper right. Without lifting, pull the pen straight down (or with a slight curve) along the right edge of the loop to the baseline. In some styles the tail extends slightly below the baseline.
- ✗ Leaving the upper loop open, which turns the 9 into a g or a stylised q
- ✗ Making the descending tail too short, so the 9 looks like a 0 with a hook
- ✗ Drawing the loop too large relative to the tail, unbalancing the digit
- ✗ Curving the tail too far inward, producing a digit that resembles a 4

Practice Tips for Cursive “9”
- 1Practise the loop and the descending tail as one continuous motion — lifting the pen between them produces a disconnected, sketchy 9.
- 2Make sure the loop closes cleanly; an open loop is the most common cause of misread 9s.
- 3Drill rows of '6' and '9' alternately to train the eye to flip the orientation correctly.
- 4Use a baseline guide so every tail descends to the same point, keeping number sequences neat.
