About Flourishes & Swashes in Calligraphy
Flourishes and swashes are the ornamental flourishes that distinguish master penmanship from competent lettering. Rooted in 18th- and 19th-century Engrosser’s Script and English Roundhand, they evolved from the practical need to fill space on luxury manuscripts into a celebrated demonstration of control, rhythm, and compositional balance.
This tool gives you a digital sketchbook for those same compositions. Type a word, pick a style preset, and toggle five distinct flourish families until the composition sings. Use it to mock up wedding monograms before inking, to test social-media wordmarks for a launch, or to prototype a logotype that you will later vectorise. If you are new to script lettering, pair this tool with our cursive generator to first explore base letterform options.
Five flourish families, three style presets
The generator separates flourishes into five toggleable types — entry (left of the word), exit (right), ascender (above), descender (below), and decorative loops (along the baseline). Each type is rendered as an SVG cubic-Bezier path anchored to the measured bounding box of your typed text, so the curves stay aligned no matter which font or word length you choose. The three style presets (elegant, playful, Victorian) reshape every active flourish in unison; explore them all to find the voice that matches your project. For deeper context on the script families that inspired these presets, see our calligraphy styles guide.
Less is usually more. Start with the entry and exit flourishes only — those two alone read as “intentionally ornamented” without crowding the word. Add ascender or descender swashes only when the letterform supports it (an h, l, t, or k for ascenders; a g, j, p, or y for descenders). Save the decorative loops for monograms shorter than five characters where they anchor the composition rather than competing with the letters.
From digital sketch to inked piece
The generator is most useful as a planning tool. Once you have a composition you like, export it as a PDF, print it lightly on practice paper, and trace over it with a pointed pen or brush pen to internalise the curves. The practice sheet generator can produce a slant-grid underlay that pairs naturally with this output. If pointed-pen technique is new to you, work through our calligraphy beginner guide first to build the muscle memory that makes flourish work feel effortless.
Modern calligraphy embraces deliberately imperfect, bouncy flourishes — the playful style preset captures that rhythm. For a deeper look at the contemporary script revival and how to develop your own voice within it, read our modern calligraphy guide.
Every export is yours to use commercially — the SVG paths are generated locally in your browser and the underlying script fonts ship under the SIL Open Font License. Bookmark the URL after settling on a design; the seed and every control state are encoded in the query string so the exact same composition reloads anywhere you open the link.
