Plan the balance before picking up your pen
Start with a short quotation and choose deliberate line breaks. Set your paper size and margins, then compare the measured widths. Use each line’s optical shift to balance flourishes or a heavier word, rather than expecting mathematical centering to settle every composition.
This approach is informed by Jake Rainis’s guide to centering calligraphy compositions, which explains why character counts alone do not predict line width. This planner does not reproduce his letter-unit system: it measures the selected digital font. Your handwritten version still needs a trial draft.
From layout to lettering
Need a regular practice grid rather than a composition? Use the letter spacing guide. Explore calligraphy techniques, blackletter calligraphy and broad-edge calligraphy techniques when choosing how to draw the letters.
