A black bottle for a black-ink task
The linked product is the 2 fl oz bottle of Speedball Super Black India Ink. The manufacturer also sells larger sizes, but those are not the quantity assumed here. A smaller bottle is a straightforward way to start if most of your work is black linework and you do not need a box of colors.
Speedball describes highly opaque carbon-black pigment and waterproof results once dry. Those are formulation claims, not evidence that it is darker than every competing ink.
The ink guide puts India ink in context. This review concerns suitable dip-pen and brush use, not an all-purpose refill for anything called a pen. That distinction is more important than whether a bottle is presented as professional.
Separate opacity from flow
An opaque pigment description tells you something about coverage, not exactly how a particular nib will carry the ink. A fine hairline, a shaded downstroke and a broad brush fill deposit different amounts. They may also dry differently on the same sheet.
Start with the tool you intend to use and make a small sample. The nib guide explains the difference between a pointed nib and a broad edge. The technique guide helps connect the tool to the movement. Neither replaces a trial of the actual ink and paper.
Waterproof once dry is not a stopwatch
There is no universal drying time in this review. A wet shaded stroke can behave differently from a thin line, and the paper and room conditions matter. Do not stack sheets or add a wash just because a neighboring mark looks dry.
If you plan to layer color over the black line, test that sequence on a spare area. The watercolor guide helps distinguish a wash over a fixed mark from a technique that deliberately reactivates color. Super Black is not chosen here as a water-reactivatable medium after drying.
Keep it out of fountain-pen reservoirs
Do not put this ink in a cartridge or converter for a LAMY joy, Metropolitan or other ordinary fountain pen. A manufacturer’s general word pen does not mean every reservoir and feed system is suitable for India ink.
Use a tool whose instructions permit the ink and give you an appropriate cleaning method. For a dip setup, the holder guide explains the separate handle and nib. The fact that the ink bottle is convenient does not settle nib compatibility or holder fit.
Clean fresh ink from tools before residue becomes a problem. Speedball’s description of free flow and non-clogging behavior should not be read as permission to leave ink drying in a nib or fitting. The tool’s care instructions still apply.
Use a small working supply
Speedball’s FAQ suggests a secondary dish or inkwell when working for an extended period, so the main bottle does not need to stay open throughout. Choose a stable vessel appropriate to the task and keep it away from the writing arm. A small working portion can also make cleanup more manageable.
Do not pour a contaminated working mixture back into the bottle. If your technique calls for modification, test a separate portion and label it. This review does not supply a universal dilution recipe or claim that every altered mixture keeps the original ink’s behavior.
The paper guide is a useful next stop. Pick the sheet for the amount of liquid and the intended tool. A paper that works for a small fountain-pen stub is not automatically suitable for a heavy brush fill or a wet layer over it.
Make a sample you can use later
Write down the ink name, paper and tool. Make a fine line, an ordinary writing stroke and a small filled patch. Let them dry before inspecting the edges and reverse. Keep the sample instead of judging the ink only while it is wet and glossy.
The practice-sheet tool can supply a copying layout, but the printed font is not a guarantee of appropriate dip-pen stroke order. Use a real exemplar for the script. The spacing tool can help evaluate the finished word, while the practice calendar gives you a reason to repeat the setup rather than continually change supplies.
For Copperplate, keep the initial shades modest and focus on release of pressure. If ink behaves poorly, check loading, nib preparation and paper before adding more force. A darker target line is not a reason to damage a point.
Who should choose this bottle?
For a batch project, make the sample with the same stroke thickness as the finished work. A fine test line is a poor check for a design filled with heavy black letters. Include an ordinary word and one filled shape, then test the next production step on that spare sheet: stacking, scanning, or adding another medium.
Note what you did and when, without treating that observation as a universal drying time. If you change paper halfway through the batch, repeat the check. A thicker-looking replacement sheet may still handle wet pigment differently from the stock you started with.
You mainly practice or illustrate in black
A single black bottle fits that routine without spreading the purchase across unused colors. Check that the quantity suits your likely use and that you have a proper cleaning setup. Buying the largest size is not automatically economical if the working method is still uncertain.
You need a range of pigment colors
Read the Bombay Set 1 review. Its palette includes black and white as well as transparent colors. Choose it because the project needs those colors, not because twelve bottles make a beginner setup look more complete.
You need a verified vegan formula
Do not choose Super Black on that assumption. Speedball’s current FAQ says it is not vegan and distinguishes it from the newer India Ink line. Claims about that newer line do not transfer to this product, even when both sit on the same shop shelf.
A focused recommendation
We have not measured this ink against every competitor for blackness, drying, flow or resistance to light. The reason to buy is narrower: a documented carbon-black India ink in the linked size for a suitable monochrome task. If you want black marks without an open bottle, consider the Sakura brush pens as a different format rather than pretending the two systems behave identically.
Pros and cons
Reasons to consider it
- Opaque carbon-black pigment
- Waterproof when dry
- Excellent for calligraphy and illustration
Trade-offs
- Can clog nibs if not cleaned
- 2 oz bottle is relatively small
